Independence Day Draw Winners Announced
Member Peter Opdahl will soon be jetting off to the United States after winning the top prize at the recent Independence Day Celebration lucky draw.
He picked up a pair of premium economy tickets with American Airlines.
Another Member, Akito Odagiri, won a business class seat with American Airlines to the US after filling out a business class seat survey.
Meanwhile, Members Courtney Treut and Christina Siegel each received a Coca-Cola golf bag and Youichi Murai took home a Coca-Cola suitcase.
Club to Welcome Webb Ellis Cup
Members will be able to view rugby union's Webb Ellis Cup up close when the trophy visits the Club on July 24.
As part of its 100-day Japan tour ahead of the start of the Rugby World Cup in Japan on September 20, the cup will be on display in the first-floor Family Lobby from 7pm to 9pm.
Named after William Webb Ellis, the purported schoolboy inventor of the sport, the trophy has been presented to the winner of the World Cup since the first tournament in 1987.
The winning team of this year's competition will lift the cup on November 2 in Yokohama.
CHOP to Offer Club-Exclusive Steaks
CHOP Steakhouse is set to become the first restaurant in Japan to offer a selection of American wagyu steaks from Snake Rivers Farms in Idaho.
Unveiling its new menu on July 8, CHOP's lineup of premium American steaks features a 39-ounce porterhouse (pictured), a 14-ounce rib eye and a 16-ounce New York strip loin from Snake River Farms' cross-bred cattle.
"While other steakhouses offer USDA Prime, Snake River Farms exceeds that level of grading with its intense, wagyu cross-derived marbling," says Scott Kihara, the Club's chef de cuisine, in the July issue of INTOUCH. "The steaks offer a combination of sweet, buttery marbling with a full American beef flavor."
Other new offerings include steaks from Double R Ranch in the Pacific Northwest and a burger with an American wagyu patty from Nebraska’s family-run Morgan Ranch.
Club to Honor Former US Ambassador
Former US Ambassador to Japan John Roos will receive the Club's Distinguished Achievement Award at a presentation ceremony on June 20.
Roos, who served as America's top diplomat in Japan between 2009 and 2013, is being recognized for his efforts to strengthen US-Japan ties.
He became the first US ambassador to visit Hiroshima (2010) and Nagasaki (2012) on the anniversaries of the atomic bombings of the cities.
In 2011, he led the American mission to support the recovery efforts following the devastating Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Two months before that tragic event, Roos, in his capacity as honorary president of the Club, spoke at the official opening of the Azabudai facility (pictured).
Previous recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award include astronaut Koichi Wakata, mountaineer Junko Tabei and literary scholar Donald Keene.
US Track Stars to Visit Club
Team USA's top sprinters are set to visit the Club on May 9.
The athletes, who will compete at the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama from May 11 to 12, will drop by the Winter Garden for an evening meet and greet with Members.
Among the star-studded squad are 11 world medalists and three 2016 Olympic medalists, including world 100-meter champion Tori Bowie, IAAF Diamond League 200-meter champ Noah Lyles (pictured), Courtney Okolo, who won gold in Rio in the 4-x-400-meter relay, and five-time Olympic medalist Justin Gatlin.
At this Club-exclusive event, Members of all ages will have a chance to meet and chat with their track heroes.
For the duration of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which runs from July 24 to August 9, the Club will serve as USA House, the hospitality hub of Team USA.
