One Club Member has discovered a whole new driving experience in his McLaren 720S.

I feel like the car really wants to go!” says Matthew Lok with a broad smile, demonstrating his point by pressing down on the accelerator of his McLaren 720S.

The mid-mounted, 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 engine growls in agreement.

The 720S is a car engineered with speed and power in mind. Everything from its 710 horsepower and 770 Nm of torque to the sculpted body combine to propel the supercar from zero to 100 km/h in an astonishing 2.9 seconds. Just one look is enough to spot the car’s racing DNA running through its sleek contours.

“The McLaren is made for driving,” says Lok, who has only been enjoying his “volcano yellow” 720S since October. “Everything is geared to performance.”

Originally from Hong Kong, Lok, 40, is no stranger to high-performance cars, having owned a number of different models over the years. But the moment he opened the McLaren’s iconic “butterfly” dihedral doors and climbed into the stylishly minimalist cabin with its shapely seats, he knew he was in for an unparalleled driving experience.
“I’ve driven numerous sports cars before,” the Club Member says, “but this felt so different.”

When the 720S was launched in 2017, its ultralightweight, carbon-fiber Monocage body wrapped around a monster V8, precise handling and exceptional comfort redefined McLaren’s Super Series lineup of road cars. It also put down a marker to all other supercar producers.

Even before Lok had pushed the “engine start” button, he was captivated by the car’s unmistakable design and driver-focused cockpit in the Tokyo showroom.

“It really caught my eye, and I decided on the spot to buy it,” he says. “It differentiates itself from other supercars. McLaren is the only true sports car maker—and with a racing and F1 background.”

McLaren’s roots in racing date back to the 1960s. The UK-based automaker applies the engineering technology and expertise that has earned it so much success on the track to its production of high-performance cars for the road.

McLaren Automotive arranges annual track days with professional drivers in Japan, and Lok says he is looking forward to an opportunity to unleash the intoxicating power of his McLaren on a circuit, where the car’s Track mode-enabled, race-ready grip enables it to truly excel.

For now, though, he’s happy to keep turning heads while cruising through city streets.

“There are supercars that are more expensive, but this really catches people’s eyes,” he says. “It’s pretty unique—even in Tokyo.”
