New Ground
The British School in Tokyo prepares for a major move.
Having already established itself as one of the premier international schools in Japan, The British School in Tokyo (BST) is ready to head in new directions that will provide its students with transformative learning experiences.
One of the most significant moves for the school will take place in less than a year, when BST opens its new primary campus in one of the city’s most exciting new real estate developments.
The new campus will be located in Mori Building’s historic Toranomon-Azabudai Project, which is the biggest residential, commercial and education development in central Tokyo for more than a generation. The project will be an urban oasis, featuring some 24,000 square meters of green space, and conveniently reached from either Roppongi 1-Chome or Kamiyacho Stations. BST is the only international school that is a part of the project, which is just around the corner from Tokyo American Club’s Azabudai location.
BRILLIANT FACILITIES
Serving students from nursery (3 years old) to Year 6 (11 years old), the campus will have a truly distinct look and feel in keeping with its impressive surroundings. Designed by the renowned architects Thomas Heatherwick Studios, it will feature organic, curvilinear shapes and ample green spaces. The 15,000-square-meter campus is spread over seven floors above the ground, including a roof garden, and one subterranean floor. The campus will have an indoor swimming pool, two libraries, an art studio, a discovery center for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning, a sports hall and two sports fields. Primary students who attended BST’s Showa and Shibuya campuses will all take their classes at this new campus, which is also close to BST’s secondary school location.

Along with its proven track record of excellence in academics, BST offers more than 130 extracurricular activities and clubs. With everything from sports, art and music to cooking, coding and photography, BST encourages young learners to follow their interests—and the new campus will be an ideal place to do so.
As BST Principal Paul Tough explains, the new campus will help the school cement its sterling reputation as an educational institution. “Without question, the new central Tokyo campus positions BST at the forefront of primary education in Japan and globally. In our enviable position at the heart of one of the world’s leading cities, the state-of-the-art facilities will maximize innovative learning and extensive opportunities for all students.”
Applications for the new campus are now being accepted.
