CWAJ 75th Anniversary Special Reception: Trailblazers

The Frederick Harris Gallery invites Members to a reception celebrating women who played a pivotal role in reshaping Japan’s postwar art scene, with complimentary wine and canapés.

The exhibit, organized by the College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ), highlights five female artists’ defiance against conventional norms and their profound influence on contemporary art.

Toko Shinoda, who lived to be 107, challenged the status quo by pursuing a career in calligraphy and abstract art, gaining global recognition with her pieces. Throughout her life, she remained independent, influencing artists for decades.

The late Chizuko Yoshida opened the doors for future generations with her vibrant printmaking, which is known for its intricate designs. She cofounded the Women’s Print Association in 1956.

Renowned as a printmaker, the late Reika Iwami harnessed her mastery of sumi ink and gold and silver leaf to create textures that conveyed a variety of emotions. Her recognition peaked when she was featured in James A. Michener’s book Japanese Prints: From the Early Masters to the Modern.

Eighty-four-year-old Noriko Yanagisawa worked in New York in the ‘70s, and is known for her considerable skill in printmaking, oil painting and mixed media. She later shared her knowledge as a professor at Musashino Art University.

Finally, Toeko Tatsuno was the first woman and youngest artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Art, Tokyo. The artist, who passed away at 64, was celebrated for her innovative use of color and abstract forms.

The artworks will be on display from October 8 through November 1.

Artworks are available for purchase through Member Services, and proceeds from print sales will help fund CWAJ’s scholarship program and other relief projects.
