Bunshichi Kaihatsu II, who brings a selection of his ceramic tea vessels to the Frederick Harris Gallery this month, crafts pieces that continue his father’s legacy while reflecting his own signature style.
Born and raised in Kanazawa as Fumiaki Kaihatsu, the artist revered his father’s free spirit.
The elder Bunshichi Kaihatsu eschewed convention, as well as the organizations that could have lifted the ceramics artist’s status among Japan’s art community.
The younger Kaihatsu dropped out of the Kanazawa College of Art to apprentice under his father, eventually inheriting his father’s name and kiln after he passed away in 1972.
“I think the real work of art should be something so universal that it can transcend age and trend,” he says.
