Pilates for Beginners

Discover strength, energy and improved movement through a low-impact, full-body workout that is embraced by thousands across the globe.

What will I learn in this class?
Pilates promotes strength and balanced muscle development, flexibility and an improved range of motion. Through this introduction to Pilates, you will build an understanding of your body and movement while immersing yourself in increasingly intense workouts.

What are the benefits of this class?
“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence are worth hours of doing sloppy exercise or forced contortion,” said Joseph Pilates, who set up the first Pilates studio in New York City in 1926.

Although Pilates focuses on building core strength, it trains the entire body through exercises that develop correct posture and technique—without placing strain on your joints. Pilates doesn’t restrict itself to a single muscle group. One movement alone may work your abdominals, inner thighs, glutes and arms.

Stronger abdominals, back muscles and pelvic floor provide support for your spine and lead to good posture and more efficient movements. In turn, you’ll find improved strength and endurance when playing sport or exercising.

Who will teach this class?
Ilka von Witzendorff (pictured) is a BASI (Body Arts and Science International)-certified mat and apparatus Pilates instructor. Originally from Germany, she has been teaching group fitness classes, including aerobics, step and salsa, since 1998. The Club Member has also worked as a fitness coach and a youth track and field trainer.
