The Frederick Harris Gallery invites Members to an evening of discourse with American artist and Member Jason Hatchell over complimentary wine and canapés.
Hatchell's exhibit features dynamic, abstract pieces made with acrylic and spray paint that blend the influences of Japanese calligraphy, Pacific Northwest nature and graffiti.
His art, textured and layered, uses "addition by subtraction" with abrasive tools that creates a worn, aged look. He also manipulates paint drying times to achieve a crackled effect and embrace the power of serendipity.
"For me, art is not an option. It is an all-engrossing expression of self that has no end," shares the University of Pennsylvania graduate.
Hatchell's art reveals how fleeting moments can be translated into powerful, lasting visual experiences amidst a world of constant distraction.
Artworks are available for purchase through Member Services.
Moment I realized I wanted to become an artist.
While performing since childhood, the shift from stage to visual art came when I realized I could "make" art, not just admire it, holding my own against artists I respected.
What I would tell my 20-year-old self.
Don't take life too seriously, embrace the absurdity and fill your time with what brings you joy.
My perfect creative environment.
I'm at my most creative when limitations force me to innovate and find new ways of expressing myself.
Artist, living or dead, I’d most like to share a meal with.
David Hockney
Jason Hatchell’s exhibit application immediately caught the Committee’s attention with his bold use of color and striking abstract techniques. His ability to provoke interpretation and encourage viewers to discover their own meaning in his work made his exhibit an exciting and compelling choice for the Fred Harris Gallery.
