The Zen garden is one of Japan’s enduring iconic images.
Known in Japanese as a karesansui, or dry landscape garden, it is a distinctive style of garden of rocks, gravel, sand and moss carefully arranged as an expression of nature and the universe.
Learn about the history, principles and design of karesansui and famous examples around Japan before creating your own miniature version.
Students choose a ceramic or lacquerware container then build their personal Zen garden with the provided rocks, sand, gravel, preserved moss and ornaments like stone lanterns.
Instructor
Kazuko Morio is a member of the Garden Society of Japan and a Japan Gardening Society-certified garden designer. She is also a licensed national guide-interpreter. She lectures and provides walking tours to Japanese gardens. Her clients include garden enthusiasts, international students and tour guides.
