The traditional comedic performing art form of kyogen takes center stage at the first Women’s Group luncheon of 2017.
Sisters Tokuro Miyake (right) and Junko Izumi exhibit their skills of this traditionally male stage art.
Both are members of their family’s Izumi School of Kyogen. In fact, Junko was the first female professional kyogen actress in Japan.
The sisters have been recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Education for their work teaching youth about this art form that grew out of folk song and dance traditions of Japan’s imperial court.
