Masamu Onuki

March 8–April 4

With an attention to detail and vivid splashes of color, Masumi Onuki's woodblock prints are simple but unmistakably emotive. "I find beautiful things and landscapes in my daily surroundings," the Tokyo native says. "The images come from my various feelings, such as sadness, loneliness and modest happiness."

The aim is to employ those everyday objects to express her sentiments using a range of artistic techniques. Onuki crafts each work by first carving an image into the shina plywood, then applying layers of watercolors and covering the surface in Japanese paper. Afterward, a disk-shaped baren, a traditional print tool with a flat bottom and bamboo handle, is used to burnish the paper before tracing it.

"In addition to the ukiyo-e techniques that come from old Japanese customs, I adopt modern materials and new techniques," says the artist, whose prints will be featured in the Genkan Gallery this month.

Born in 1965, Onuki graduated from Tama Art University in 1988 and subsequently worked as a researcher of Spanish mini-prints at Tama Art University Graduate School. Her first solo exhibition came in 1994 in Ginza, and her works have been displayed since in numerous group and solo shows across Japan.
